Archer Cork Skateboards has produced a vibration reducing cork composite skateboard. This board was developed to raise awareness that composites can be responsible to the environment as well as a performance product. Skateboards have always traditionally been wood, or composite carbon, but Archer decided to use Amorim’s CoreCork, and reinforce it with bComp Amplitex Flax fabrics, and infuse it with Sicomin GreenPoxy. The result was a laminate that displayed an extraordinary reduction in vibration, creating a smooth ride for the skater, and a true performance benefit, without the use of any traditional materials and proving there is a sustainable, responsible choice, without sacrificing performance.

By using these specific materials, we have proven that Environmentally responsible composite materials are not a sacrifice in performance, and can in this particular circumstance be an improvement in performance. By using the CoreCork and flax’s natural ability to absorb vibration, we are shifting away from the traditional wood laminates and improved an ongoing problem with the previous traditional construction methods. These new materials are sustainable, responsible and what we believe will be not a replacement, but a valuable inclusion to future composites.

This innovation started out as a challenge to see how best to suppress the vibration on a skateboard, but in the course of doing so created a laminate that surpassed our expectation. It not only displayed a vibration reduction, but did so using materials that are sustainable. This is important for all of us to see that going green does not mean a compromise in performance, it can actually improve it!
